Breastplates

Plains Indian men began wearing breastplates after 1850. They made them from hair pipe beads and tied them around the neck and waist to keep them in place. The breastplates were worn for looks more than for protection. The men did not typically wear armor, though some tribes wore heavy elk or buffalo hide much earlier (Paterek 1994, 86).
