Collection Overview

Collection summary derived from "Guidebook to Manuscripts", 1969: These records are divided between Confederate Paper an Union Papers. Confederate papers include items regarding the release of Tyre L. Harris, and underage conscriptee, 9 tax receipts from Charles Powell, 15 Registered Bonds of the Confederate States of America, the signature papers of a Treaty between the Confederate States and the Chickasaw and Choctaw Nation, and a newspaper article, dated June 9, 1864 regarding the Sloop of War "Kearsage" sinking the "Alabama". A manuscript dated August 23-25, 1904 concerns the "Members Ribbon Third Reunion U.C.V. Ind". The Union Papers include an anti-slavery poem, Brownlow's Dream: " The Future of Rebels and Copperheads", a roster and history of the 5th Iowa Infantry Volunteers, and an unsigned and undated manuscript called "The Little Recruit". A later note attributes this work to Sydney L. Daily. This file also includes Sydney L. Daily's discharge papers and his photograph is in the Photography Files. The J. W. Strong Papers are letters between Strong and his wife, Jennie. The letters detail army life, army living conditions, morale and morals of the men, disease and battle casualties. Most letters are from Helena, Arkansas, and show he was discharged by May 10, 1863. The Timothy Warren Papers show his discharge from the Illinois Infantry. The James C. Watson papers contain his discharge papers and an envelope of the Department of Interior, The United states Indian Agency with the name Jessie Burchart.

Provenance

The Gilcrease Foundation acquired these materials before 1964 and is housed in the Helmerich Center for American Research (HCAR). The library currently receives most materials through community donation, board members, artists and the acquisition of manuscript collections.

Staff, interns, and volunteers of the Thomas Gilcrease Library and Archive have contributed to the organization and maintenance of the files since the collection passed to the City of Tulsa in the 1950s.
