Description: 2 items

Collection summary derived from "Guidebook to Manuscripts", 1969: Artist Alfred Jacob Miller (1811-1874), landscape and portrait painter, was especially noted for his studies of the Indians of the Rocky Mountain area. Born in Baltimore, Miller studied painting with Thomas Sully in 1831-32. In 1837 he met Captain William Drummond Stewart while he was in New Orleans and accompanied him on an expedition into the Rocky Mountains. Miller made over a hundred on-the-spot sketches of Indian life which he later elaborated in his studio in Baltimore and later in Scotland.
A manuscript entitled "Rough Drafts to Notes on Indian Sketches" comprises his notes on 166 sketches. Photostatic copies of these notes are included. The second item is a notebook containing a description of Fort William on the Laramie.

Background: Staff, interns, and volunteers of the Thomas Gilcrease Library and Archive have contributed to the organization and maintenance of the files since the collection passed to the City of Tulsa in the 1950s. The Gilcrease Foundation acquired these materials before 1964 and is housed in the Helmerich Center for American Research (HCAR). The library currently receives most materials through community donation, board members, artists and the acquisition of manuscript collections.
