Collection Overview

Collection summary derived from "Guidebook to Manuscripts", 1969: Handwritten letter from Thomas Gilcrease to "Frank" [Walling] about his successes, failures, betrayals, etc. and how the natural things around him had restored his faith. A second letter about philosophies of life, faith and striving for the best in all. A third letter is typed from Thomas Gilcrease in San Antonio to Frank G. Walling in Tulsa regarding the care of any of his minor children that should survive him, since all of his assets had been given to the Thomas Gilcrease Foundation. Another letter is from W. C. Cornish in Tulsa to Boot & Shoe Recorder in New York City regarding starting a shoe business at war's end. He also has a notice from the Social Security Board asking him to appear at the Social Security Office to discuss his "wage record." There is an envelope signed by Senator Claude Pepper in lieu of postage with a typed letter signed by Senator Claude Pepper to Mr. Maxey Lewis thanking Mr. Lewis for his letter supporting Senator Pepper's recent speech on foreign policy. A printed copy of speech," An American Policy for Peace and a New World", given by Claude Pepper in 1946 is included. Brochure entitled Exhibition of Joseph Henry Sharp paintings signed by Thomas Gilcrease and sent to Frank Walling. Tulsa Tribune article about Gilcrease Oil Company and it's five early directors, particularly Charles Lamb and Pierce Larkin. "Public Relations Committee's guide to the Gilcrease Collections, Tulsa. Biographies of Thomas Gilcrease and prominent artists exhibited - directors, staff, etc. Signed Willard Stone brochure for an exhibition at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame.

Provenance

The Gilcrease Foundation acquired these materials before 1964 and is housed in the Helmerich Center for American Research (HCAR). The library currently receives most materials through community donation, board members, artists and the acquisition of manuscript collections.

Staff, interns, and volunteers of the Thomas Gilcrease Library and Archive have contributed to the organization and maintenance of the files since the collection passed to the City of Tulsa in the 1950s.
