Manuscript Collection: William W. Fyffe

Institution: Thomas Gilcrease Library and Archive
Language of Material: English
Description: 3 items
Period covered: 1752 - 1773
Collection summary derived from "Guidebook to Manuscripts", 1969: The major item here is a letter dated February 1, 1761, from William Fyffe (n. d.), a Scottish doctor who settled at George Town, South Carolina. It was written to his brother, John Fyffe, a merchant and banker of Edinburgh, Scotland, and contains an excellent description of the Cherokees-their manners, customs, troubles, etc. The lengthy letter of over 8000 words gives evidence that William Fyffe was a man of education and discernment. The letter came originally from the Sir Leicester Harmsworth Library and was sold by Sotheby at auction, May 1948.
The other two items are letters, one from each of the brothers to their sister, Miss Betty Fyffe in Dundee.

Background: Staff, interns, and volunteers of the Thomas Gilcrease Library and Archive have contributed to the organization and maintenance of the files since the collection passed to the City of Tulsa in the 1950s. The Gilcrease Foundation acquired these materials before 1964 and is housed in the Helmerich Center for American Research (HCAR). The library currently receives most materials through community donation, board members, artists and the acquisition of manuscript collections.
