Mississippian Ceremonial Maces

These blades were bifacially flaked to form the basic mace shape, and then were ground and polished.  This type of mace ranges in size from 13 -- 20-inches length.  The major center for these maces was the Spiro Mound, LeFlore County, Oklahoma.  Seven of these artifacts were found at Spiro in excavations during the 1930’s.  A few of these maces have also been found at other locations in the Southeastern United States.
