Monolithic Ceremonial Axes
This axe and handle was carved from a single piece of stone, and is thought to have served a ceremonial purpose. Such axes are found in the southeastern United States and date to the Mississippian Period, AD 700 -- 1500. It is unlikely that this axe was used as a working tool or as a weapon. It is an excellent example of Mississippian ground stone tool-making technology. There is a small hole in the butt of the handle that was likely used for a leather thong.
