John Marshall (1755-1835) was an American founder and Supreme Court Justice. As the Chief Justice from 1801-1835, Marshall played a decisive role in establishing the principle of judicial review and in limiting the expansion of Jacksonian Democracy during its early phase. Against Indian Removal, Marshall handed down a verdict in favor of Cherokee and United States federal sovereignty.
