Completed in 1875, the central section of this building was once the home of John Ross’s brother, Lewis Ross. The Cherokee Nation purchased the home and the land in 1872 as a home for orphans, after which wings were added and a school farm was established. The refuge for orphans was a progressive development in the history of the Cherokee Nation.
