Cherokee National Female Seminary, near Park Hill / Vinson Lackey

Gallery Label

Like its male counterpart, the Cherokee Female Seminary provided generations of Cherokee women with a classical education. The female academy was the first high school for females and the first non-sectarian academy west of the Mississippi (it opened two days before the male seminary). Both Cherokee high schools were unique in that they were created and run by the tribe—not the federal government or missionaries.
