Inscribed in type, “White Buffalo Dance In this painting with the buffalo mask, we can visualize the hunters as they pantomime the spearing of the sacred white buffalo hide. Around the fire they dance, chanting and praying for success in the hunt. The great herds of buffalo that roamed the western prairie were intrinsic parts of Indian life. The buffalo was their food, their clothing, and their homes. The most important date of the year was the hunt. Conservation was practiced for the protection of the herds. When the white man slaughtered the buffalo, they caused the deaths of many Indians, for without food the Indians were easy prey to the white man’s guns. Many tribes perished completely. The survivors were forced into submission.” on attached piece of paper in upper left on verso; Inscribed in type, “(#22) Buffalo Dance [portion of text cut off]inting with buffalo mask, we can [portion of text cut off] the hunters as they pantomine the spearin [sic] [portion of text cut off]acred white buffalo hide.
