William Potter Ross (1820-1891) was a Chief of the Cherokee. He founded and edited the Cherokee Advocate, an important paper in the history of the Cherokee Nation. A graduate of Princeton University, Ross also influenced the classical education curriculum in the Cherokee seminary schools. When he participated in the Grand Council, he was so moved by George Lowery’s speech that he gave up teaching and became a tribal councilman.
