Sully was born into a family of actor and moved with with them to America in 1789. He studied under Benjamin West and Sir Thomas Lawrence in Europe and when he returned to America in 1838, he setteled in Philadelphia where he became a celebrated potrait painter of famous people including Lafayette, Jefferson, Washington, and Longfellow. Like Lawrence, Sully created romantic portarits of mood with elegant poses, refined lighting, and rich colors. Comment on works: portrait; figure; miniature
