Cherokee National Insane Asylum, just south of Tahlequah / Vinson Lackey

Established in 1872 with tribal funds, this asylum indicated the progressive nature of the Cherokee. The building served multiple purposes over time, ultimately being sold to the United States government in 1914, and then serving as the foundation for the Sequoyah Indian Training School.
