El Ballet tras Bastidores / Maria B. Izquierdo, 1902 - 1955, Mexican (Artist)

Gallery Label

Figures in this painting appear both indifferent to and aware of the viewer. Frenzied dancers clad in intense pinks, reds and blues turn their backs to us while several still figures seem to stare beyond the confines of the painting. Like María Izquierdo herself, a painter who faced great adversity due to her gender, the dancers cultivate their artistic practice in front of watchful eyes.
