Paleolithic Man / Frederic Remington

Essay/Description

The model for Paleolithic Man was created in 1906. This specific sculpture was possibly created using an original bronze cast, not the artist's model, which would make it a fake.

Curatorial Remarks

This bronze is marked as cast number 12. However, the cast number was cast through the model rather than applied after casting, which is suspicious. The foundry mark is also faint and degraded. Therefore, this is likely a surmoulage. There is no date of sale for cast number 12 in the ledger.
