Fifteen casts of this work were made during Remington’s life. The next 15 or so posthumous casts, of which this is one, seem to be of the same high quality workmanship as the lifetime casts. Note, for example, the tool marks in the surface that have been cast through from the wax model. These are visible on the horse’s left ear and mane and in the man’s shirtfront and jacket fringe. The horse’s coat is lightly textured to suggest hair. The tool marks on the left ear of the horse are parallel ridges that were made in a soft material (wax) by a modeling tool. Compare this to the other cast of the same subject (0827.44).

This bronze, cast number 24, is an early posthumous cast. It was originally sold on June 1, 1914, by Roman Bronze Works.
