Oh Mother! What Is It? / Charles Marion Russell

Gallery Label

First cast as one of a group of at least 10 in 1916, this ashtray was produced for $10/cast and sold initially for $35. Nancy Russell, charged with the casting of her husband’s work, shopped around for the best deal. Other works made by Zoppo in this period had been cast previously at the Roman Bronze Works for a higher price. Nancy specified that the casts made by Zoppo were to be a dull green color. However, neither this nor the other two Zoppo casts in the Gilcrease collection are green.
