John C. Calhoun / Clark Mills

John C. Calhoun (1782-1850) was one of the most prominent statesmen in the Early Republic and antebellum eras, serving as a congressman and senator from South Carolina, as well as Andrew Jackson’s Vice President. He favored Indian removal, as he believed that American civilization was superior to Native American society.
