Dying Buffalo / Willard Stone

Gallery Label

Tom (Gilcrease) gave me some wood...a large piece of ebony which had come from Africa and he said ‘I want you to carve me a buffalo out of this.’ I started to work and finally came up with the idea of carving a buffalo lying down. He was supposed to have been shot with a bow and arrow and so I put the arrow in him, but I see that someone has taken it out or it has been lost.
