Signed, "CBW-84" in lower right at end of cane; Inscribed in artist's hand on mat, "WINNEBAGO The tribal officers who selected this man for me considered him their "Old Chief" and a pureblood, however he told me the Great Blackhawk, Chief of the Sauk tribe, was a distant blood relative. It seems the Winnebago had been caretakers of the captured Blackhawk c 1832 and they had given him wives".
