Machine made, wove paper, originally dark cream in color, smooth, mat surface. The main image is located on the felt side of the support; wire side on verso.. Transmitted light reveals an even distribution of fibers and pronounced wire mesh pattern.PR edge of the drawing has been torn out from a bound volume. Same paper as 13.758 and 13.755. The verso of the support contains the PL half of a line sketch that exists on the verso of 13.758.
Thomas Moran, landscape painter, etcher, engraver, lithographer. Born February 12, 1837, at Bolton Lancashire (England) accompanied his family to Maryland in 1844, and studied painting with his brother Edward in Philadelphia during the mid-1850. In 1862 the two Morans went to England for further study and came under the influence of Turner. Thomas visited Europe again in the same decade and several times in the later years. His fame rests largely on his large paintings of scenes in the Far West, including Yellowstone Park, Yosemite, and the Grand Canyon of the Colorado. His home was in Philadelphia until 1872 when he moved to Newark (N.J.) and shortly after to NYC. In 1916 he moved to Santa Barbara (Cal.) where he died on August 26, 1926.

Born 12 January 1837; died 25 August 1926. In 1844, Moran and his family settled in Maryland. Moran began his career in the 1850s as a wood engraver in Philadelphia. In the mid-1850s, he studied painting in Philadelphia under his brother Edward Moran. Moran and his brother travelled to England in 1862 to study painting. In the 1860s, Moran also visited France and Italy. In 1871, Moran accompanied the Geological Survey of Yellowstone National Park, Colorado. In 1872, Moran established himself in New York City.
