Escena de una Calle Mexicana / Miguel Covarrubias

Gallery Label

This lithograph captures a moment of suspense. A mustachioed male figure resembles the zapatistas (revolutionary soldiers who served under Emiliano Zapata) in Mexico’s great murals depicting the Revolution. He approaches a seated young, indigenous woman wrapped in her rebozo with a basket on her lap. Two people from historically marginalized classes are thrust in the spotlight by the artist. We are left to imagine the story of their encounter on this empty street in an ordinary town.
