Stephen James Ferris married Thomas Moran's sister, Elizabeth, who is depicted here. An ardent advocate for printmaking, Stephen collected more than 2000 European and American prints. The Ferris family donated the collection to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American HIstory between 1927 and 1932.
