Curatorial Remarks

This appears to be a photograph of the 1859 version of Moran's painting, Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came. Moran created a smaller version in 1885 [See 4316.5606] . The painting was inspired by Robert Browning's poem of the same name, which was in turn inspired by Shakespeare's King Lear.
