Curatorial Remarks

The Black Wall Street survivors series was created for the survivors to tell their stories about the human disaster of 1921 on the streets of Greenwood. The filming began on April of 1996. The bulk of the interviews were filmed inside the Mabel Little Heritage House, Greenwood Cultural Center, and at times, in the homes of the survivors. Most of the survivors shared similar stories from the perspective of a child ranging from age 5 to 17 years of age. Many survivors would agree that their families did not talk much about what had happen in front of them fearing for the lives of their offspring. Many survivors, especially the younger ones, gave vivid details of the atrocities that occurred within the boundaries of the Negro Wall Street of America. Filming of the survivor's testimonies were recorded at the Mabel Little House located next to the Greenwood Cultural Center. Filming also occurred at the homes of the survivors.
