Human Effigy Bowl -- Rather large effigy bowl of dark polished ware; large and prominent human head with headdress in shape of an animal’s head on rim; conventionalized tail opposite
Bell Plain (highly polished) pottery type -- Bell Plain is prevalent at sites along the Mississippi River in Arkansas. It has finely crushed shell temper, a well-polished to highly polished surface, and varies in color from shades of gray to buff to orange (pp 10-12, Hathcock, Roy).
Curatorial Remarks:
Bell Plain (Phillips 1970:58-61) polished bowl with direct rim and flattened lip. Appliqued anthropomorphic head with incised ears, eyes and mouth and with a zoomorphic head-dress with punctated eyes with forked eyes motifs. Appliqued rounded tail lug with incise line around an incised circle at the center. Conical body with three engraved lines and flat oval base. 10YR 4/1 Dark Gray.
