Polychrome ceramic jar / Native American; Zuni

Essay/Description

Polychrome Jar (Olla).

This large olla shows evidence of usage as a water storage jar. Much of the white slip has flaked off the vessel as expected from prolonged water storage. The rim of the vessel is chipped as would be expected from rough contact with a dipper or ladle. The vessel appears to have been varnished, probably by an early collector, to preserve the surface finish.
