Ceramic polychrome jar with hand-painted geometric design / Maria Martinez

Essay/Description

Tunyo Polychrome olla with hand-painted geometric design; signed “Maria/Popovi” and dated 7/8/59; Maria Montoya Martinez (1888-1980) and her husband (Julian, 1885-1943) developed the technique of finishing black on black pottery. Earlier, they were accomplished in the production of Tunyo Polychrome vessels. Maria is credited with shaping the vessels and Julian painted the red and black designs on the buff-colored background. Popovi Da (died in 1971) produced vessels with Maria after Julian’s death.
