Rattler Figure, Human Effigy Pipe: The figure appears to be holding a large rattle in his left hand. The pipe shows smoking use-wear, and is well worn and marred by small pocks. It was carved from Flint Clay which naturally occurs in the Ozark Highlands. This material was used to carve a number of similar theme pipes in the American Bottom region, centered at Cahokia. It is one of at least four flint clay pipes recovered at Spiro (see Brown 1996).
