Chunkey Stone (Tennessee Style, Double Cup) -- A wide, circular disc made from a tan stone that has brown splotches and bands. Possesses a circular depression of approx. 3.48 inches in diameter on both the dorsal and ventral surfaces. The stone was first chipped away to reveal the general shape of the object. Then ground to provide the discoidal with a smooth texture and polished appearance.
A discoidal is a round Mississippian game stone that was used in the ancient Native American game known as chungke or chunkey. They are found throughout the southeastern and midwestern United States. Discoidals have been noted in late Woodland sites in Missouri and Illinois dating to about AD 700, and were observed in usage in the 18th Century. Quartz and granite were commonly used in the manufacture of discoidals.
