King Louis XIV peace medal
King Louis XIV peace medal / European
Essay/Description
Louis XIV silver medal. The French did not create special medals for Indian peoples either in Canada or in the U.S. They used existing medals that might also have been given to French citizens who served the king. Medals were awarded to politically important chiefs and warriors who had distinguished themselves in battle. Medals were attached to “flame-coloured ribbon, four fingers in breadth, and the whole decoration is highly prized among them (the Indians)”. The obverse of the medal depicts Louis XV, the Sun King. The reverse pictures the head of the Dauphin (the crown prince) and his three sons.
