German silver comb with scalloped detail and place for ribbons / Jimmie Wildcat
Essay/Description
Large curved hair comb with 6 slots for ribbons. Upper third of comb: top edge has eleven scallops cut out by stamping, each with a small hole at the cent, each hole has an oval-shaped design. Beneath scallops is stamped design of alternating 5 small and 4 large ovals in horizontal line. Beneath ovals are 2 rows of 3 slots. Below slots are 17 comb teeth. Each tooth has a pointed tip. Metal was cut out by use of cutting chisel, not y jeweler's saw. Same with slots and teeth. All design stamps appear to be commercial. Edges of comb teeth are stamped with "toothed" straight stamp for texture. No maker stamp on back.
Curatorial Remarks
Woman's hair piece with slots for ribbons to hang. These hair pieces were typically worn at stomp dances.
