Essay/Description
Basket Tray -- Coiled and twined tray made of Willow and devil’s claw with a geometric design.
Basket trays were frequently used for ritualistic purposes, such as weddings, “storing religious articles and medicine; serving sacred cornmeal; [and] drumming” (Dalrymple 2000, 80). Wedding baskets were used in the ceremony and then often given to the medicine man who officiated “as partial payment; he in turn would trade it for goods or cash” (Dalrymple 2000, 76).
