Carved and painted wooden peyote box with brass hardware / Delores Thompson
Curatorial Remarks
This peyote box would have carried a roadman's kit. It is decorated with a carved rattle, feather, and peyote buttons, and it is painted with eagles, a tipi, and the American flag. The American flag motif on Native American Church objects is more common with Navajo groups specifically. This is probably because Native American Church becomes more common after World War II, and there are many participating veterans in Arizona.
