Curatorial Remarks
These are southern plains style moccasins. These are specifically designated as Kiowa moccasins. The thing is when you get into the 20th century a lot of these items become something used for ceremonial purposes. Using the term ceremonial covers a multitude of events that relate to anything outside of everyday life. In the 19th century a lot of traditional clothing was used more every day, however by the 20th century clothing becomes more formal. Native clothes like these high-top moccasins become used for special events. These moccasins are stained yellow. The metal studs are just for decoration they are not for anything else. A lot of people wore them like this. This pair has the beaded circle, the painted stripes and the rounded toe are all specific to Kiowa construction. Used in ceremonial dances. The red beads signify more 20th century make, although the design is very reminiscent of 19th century. 19th century red beads are more maroon in color while 20th century beads are brighter red.
