Beaded buckskin gun case with fringe / Native American; Plains
Essay/Description
Beaded gun case. Buckskin with fringe. Lazy stitch beadwork with multiple geometric designs. Red flannel used as selvage.
Gun holsters and scabbards were made from tanned leather and were often decorated with fringe, beadwork, and metal tinkle cones. Holsters and scabbards were especially useful on horseback because “it freed the hands while carrying the gun at an instantly-ready-to-use position” (Baldwin 2002, 64).
