Hide rattle with horsehair and red paint / Unknown

Curatorial Remarks

I wonder if the rattle is actually made out of horsehide. A lot of the rattles are usually specified what type of leather the rattle is made out of. When we get into ritual items like rattles there is a lot of meaning surrounding the material and design of the object. The design and material becomes important. It is almost if they cut a long strip of hide and constructed it so the hair comes out the bottom. The hair appears to become the handle of the rattle. Horsehair or buffalo hair?
