April 2, 1 9 3 1. Mr. Ralph Budd, President Great Northern Railway Co., St. Paul, Minn. Dear Mr. Budd: It’s hard to know how to reach the person who was responsible for the program of the Empire Build- ers over National Broadcast on March 23d. I feel you are the person first to be thanked and, if you care to send my word of appreciation on to those who did the work for you, I will be happy to have them, as well as you, know that Jack and I were listening in here in Pasadena. It was a lovely tribute to Charlie and we want you and the author of the little play to know that our hearts were full of happy memories of the days the story brought before our minds. It was wonderful and a privilege to have known Charlie as I did and to hear broadcast how the people of the West loved him, too, made me glad. We always listen to the Empire Builders be- cause the North country is our country and we love to hear it talked about, even if it does make us homesick. When Jack grows up, I want him to have some memories of the months spent in the mountains with Charlie and his horses. We went to the Lake in 1903 and built our cabin in 1904. That story sure was right. Charlie loved the Western country and its people. Montana was his and he understood everything about it. My kindest wishes to you and yours, and thank you again. Sincerely, NCR:ED
