725 Michigan Blvd., Pasadena, California. January 5, 1934. Mr. Erwin S. Barrie, Grand Central Art Galleries, 15 Vanderbilt Avenue, New York, New York. Dear Mr. Barrie: I received a check for $241.31 in payment of the bronze “A Mountain Mother” sold at $375.00. I was very much surprised at the deduction of a thirty-five percent commission and think I should have at least been notified of this increase in commission as my understanding was when Charlie paid his membership with his work, the gallery was not to charge more than twenty percent for anything sold through it. Later, by agreement, the commission was raised to twenty-five percent but there has been no agreement or understanding that the commission should be thirty-five percent. After taking the cost of shipping and the cost of producing the bronze into consideration, the length of time the money has been tied up without interest and adding the State tax, it really puts me in the hole on the transaction. Possibly the salesman at the Fifth Avenue branch did not know I am a member of the organization. Will you please advise me further. I am wishing success to the gallery and for all those interested in it for the coming year. Sincerely,
