[1] Trail’s End 725 Michigan Blvd., Pasadena, California. October 24th, 1936. Mr. Erwin S. Barrie, Grand Central Art Galleries 15 Vanderbilt Avenue, New York, New York. Dear Mr. Barrie: Your letter of October 19th in regard to the “Buffalo Runner” received. I have no idea where your client bought this bronze for $200.00 unless some one’s estate is being liquidated or unless it is one of the bronzes at the Douthitt Gallery which was to have been turned over to your Gallery. I wrote the Douthitt Gallery under date of 6-10-31 and again under date of 5-24-32 to deliver all the Russell bronzes they had to your Gallery, sending you a copy of the letter. The original list included the following: 1-Peigan Squaw1 Smoking with Spirit of 1- The Spirit of Winter the Buffalo 1-Bear and Jug1-The Last Laugh 1-Robe Flesher1-Buffalo Runners 1-Oh, Mother What is it?1-Meat for Wild Men 1-The Snake Priest1-pair Buffalo Book Ends Under date of 6-21-32, Miss Cummings wrote me as follows: “We ‘phoned the Douthitt Galleries about the three bronzes they did not send to us – ‘The Snake Priest’, ‘The Last Laugh’, and ‘Buffalo Runners’ – and they explained that they had clients interested in these pieces and I suggested that they write to you about it so that you would understand why they were not sent to us.” Later, there was a little difficulty with the Douthitt Gallery whey a bronze was sold to one of my clients that was not Charlie’s at all but which had his name on it. I am writing the Douthitt Gallery today that the bronzes they have are to be turned over to you for which an order is enclosed. They should have [2] Mr. E.S. Barrie -2- 1 – The Snake Priest 1 – The Last Laugh 1 – The Buffalo Runners The Roman Bronze Company or any one[sic] else in New York has no right to sell the bronzes – unless it is a privately owned bronze. I do not care to get into law but you must have some one[sic] who looks after your legal matters for you and I hope, because I have made you my agent in New York, that you will help me collect the bronzes that have been scattered. They are all copyrighted and the copyrights are in effect. I feel that our business associations have been such that you will look into this matter. Enclosed is a copy of the letter to the Douthitt Gallery and an order authorizing you to pick up the bronzes in that Gallery. Very truly yours, N.B. I believe you have two copies of “Meat for Wild Men”. will you please send one copy to me here in Pasadena by marine freight. Thank you. ^[handwritten] Rect’d –papers in [Budworth?]” file^ N.C.R.
