Russell Trail's End 725 Michigan Boulevard Pasadena, California Dear Mrs. Russell: You know there is a big painting of Charley's in the House Chamber here at the Capitol, showing Lewis and Clark par- leying with a band of Indians. All year around, but especially during the tourist season, we have pop-eyed pilgrims surging through the building and of course the finest treasure to show them is that painting. The Custodian usually sends one of his janitors to ride point on these trail herds and the stories they narrate about that picture would have Jim Bridger absolutely abashed. All of which has led to considerable discussion and controversy. This Custodian party finally ~e to me wringing his hands and wanting a story they could all stick to. It seems there are two schools; one alleges that the painting depicts Lewis and Clark parleying with the Shoshones near Armstead at Shoshone Cove, or Horse Prairie as it is now called, and the other faction holds out for it being their meeting with the Flatheads in Ross' Hole at the upper end of the Bitter Boot. After consulting a lot of amateur historians I am still wandering around in a haze so decided to write headquarters.
