Cole 551 Fifth Avenue New York City Dear Philip: Your nice long letter of June 19 was received and I can imagine the process of shifting paintings is no small job in your house, but I am so happy to have this particular painting join your collection. “A Bronk[sic] to Breakfast” was painted from an incident in the life of George Lane, of Calgary, who died about five years ago. You no doubt will remember he was an intimate friend of the Prince of Wales, and it was thorough him that we sold the picture to him and to the Duke of Connaught. Mr. Lane told Charlie of an experience he had had when he was in the cow business, which was his work for a great many years, and Charlie panted the picture you have as you see it. It is true Mr. Lane said to Charley, “Now you know, Charley, no outfit ever had an axe without a broken handle. They always kept me broke buying new ones.” So Charely wrapped the axe handle to show it had been broken. Again I tell you I am glad you have that exquisite picture in your collection, and I know you will enjoy it. Please find inclosed[sic] the receipted bill for the painting.
