La Jolla, Calif. February 17, 1927. Mrs. Charles M. Russell, 701 Michigan Blvd., Pasadena, Calif. Dear Nancy:- I was all packed up and ready to leave both Sunday and Monday night; but am thankful now that I did not attempt it. With the present future outlook for train service, I do not know just when I will be able to get up and see the little pictures. I wonder if you would feel like sending ^all^ the ones in which you think I might be interested, down here, for[sic] me to look over and then discuss with you when I see you here. If you care to do this, please be sure to send every- thing which might possibly interest me. Confirming our deal of the 13th which supersedes the one which I put in writing on the 3rd, I will repeat in this letter the terms and understand- Ing of our deal as it now stands. If this letter does not in every way meet with your approval and agree with your understanding, please correct me. The bronzes which I bought from you have been paid for in advance by my check No>2327 on the Lawyers Trust Company of 160 Broadway, New York City; but instead of taking all the pictures which were list- ed in my letter of the 3rd, I am buying and you are sell- ing me only the following three pictures: Oil painting "Where Tracks Spell Meat or War", $3000. Oil painting "A Bad One" 15000. Oil painting ''Father de Smidth's[sic] First Meet- ing with the Flathead Indians'' 30000. $48000. My check No.>2327 in addition to paying in full for all of the bronzes (except Jim Bridger) in- cluded the full price for "A Doubtful Handshake" at $2500. This picture I am not taking and therefore this $2500 now rests with you as credit to me for that amount. This leave a balance of $15,500. payable upon safe receipt of "Where Tracks Spell Meat or War", the price of which is $3000., and "A Bad One", the price of which is $15,000., totaling $18,000. My credit of $2500 therefore leaves a b lance of $15,500., a check for which will be sent you as soon as my secretary in Brooklyn notifies me that these have been received in good condition. [next] -2- Against the price of $30,000. for "Father de Smidth"[sic], I am to receive from you a credit of $6500. for the following painting s of Charlie's which I will ship to you in Great Falls upon my return home in April: Water color, "The Buffalo Herd" $2000.00 Water color, "INdians on the March in the Snow” 1500.00 Oil painting, "Tanning Hides" 750.00 Oil painting, “The Travoy” 750.00 Water color, "Prairie Pirates" 1500.00 $6500.00 These pictures you will hold as a deposit of $6500. against the "Father de Smidth”[sic], leaving me a balance of $>23,500< . which I will forward to you upon my receipt in New York in good condition of "Father de Smidth” , as early as possible during the month of June. By the way, as I have already explained to you, I am counting on receiving this picture no later than the 15th of June, as I go away shortly after that date for the summer and want to personally attend to its framing and handling. You are not sending me the frame for this picture but are for the others. The rest of our agreement is as stated in my letter of the 3rd. I would much prefer to come up and snoop through the little things you have up there, for I fear that if you send the down to me you y overlook something in which I might possibly be interested. It is really very difficult to get away from here now and I understand will continue to be so for a week to ten days to come. Therefore I think this might be advisable. If you do so, please let me know what the very best you will consider doing on these pictures is. Katharine joins me in every good wish. As always, [signed] Philip G Cole
