Dear Charles: I was more or less surprised yesterday on receiving Nancy’s letter of the 12th to learn that you have had your goiter removed. I did want to speak to you about it last Winter and I am very glad that you have had it done. I am sure that it will add years to your life, and much to the pleasure of living, now that you have it out. Incidentally, I think it will add much to the world at large, for I am sure it will leave you freer to paint. This explains fully why I have not received from you the water color letter and envelope which I have been begging you for. I do not blame you at all for not having done it before tho[sic] I was disappointed, since I did not understand the situation. Nancy inquires in her letter as to whether or not I would want ^to see^ the Sheep picture if you do it. Of course I would want to see it. I rather imagine I would also want to have it, tho I would not want you to do it relying on my taking it, for it is quite possible that I would not. Frankly, however, I do not see how you could lose by doing it. Mrs. Cole and I are going out [next] 2 to California again next Winter and probably will see you there if we do not see you here in the meantime. We join in every good wish to you and Nancy and for your speedy and complete recovery.
