Charlie and I must have misunderstood you entirely regarding the placer mining picture, and we are so glad to have an opportunity to have an under- standing before Chas. goes any further with. From our conversation and your letter of January 7th we got the impression that you wanted Charlie to paint the Last Chance Gulch in the placer days for you. You gave us the dimensions you would like because your wall space was so limited. Now I don’t quite understand your letter of April 7th. You know after a lifetime of work to gain a standard Charlie would not let any piece of work leave his studio until he had done his best. If it was not up his standard we would not expect you to take it. Won’t you please let us know whether you want Charlie to do the small painting for you or do you just want to see a placer mining picture? when we have one to show? Chas. would not make it quite as small to go into his collection for exhibition purposes and as he has not started to paint it will be easy to change to a larger size canvas. There is no hurry about his getting at the picture so we will let it rest until we hear from you. If you are ever here and care to visit the studio it would give us pleasure to have you.
