On the back, handwritten in ink, 'From letter dated May 30, 1944 from J.R. Tweeddall-Salmon [writing illegible]-British Columbia, Canada: 'The picture was taken at the time of the Calgary Stampede in the summer of 1919. The location-roof of the Palliser Hotel, Calgary. With Russell are: Big Belly, Chief of the Sarcees, Phil Weinard and [illegible writing] described as a 'half breed'.'
