Pasted on the back is a text panel that reads: 'The Rocky Mountain sheep is an elusive animal, difficult to hunt because he frequents the high rocky peaks above timberlines. Even when shot it is not always possible for the hunter to get his prize. Russell painted a great canvas illustrating this situation titled, 'Meat's Not Meat 'Til Its in the Pan." this subject was modelled by the artist in 1925.'
