Pasted on the back is a text panel that reads: 'Self-portrait of Charles M. Russell on Neenah, the last of a long list of his favorite mounts: the first being the pinto, Monte, obtained in a trade with the Indians when he was a sixteen year-old lad newly-arrived in Montana. Among others of his favorites were, 'Grey Eagle' and 'Red Bird'. Russell, a lover of horses, once wrote, 'I have always liked horses and since I was eight years old have always owned a few.' After his death provision was made to pension his horses in accordance with his wishes.'
