Counting Coup

Scope and Content Notes

Leather album page with a photograph of a bronze with three Indians fighting. Remarks for the photograph include, "The Blackfoot Medicine Whip has attacked a Sioux on horseback and another on foot and is shown counting two coups, one by striking the shield of his enemy on the ground with his lance and by hitting the horse of his mounted enemy with his shield. This is a very brave act and true history and is told as a great adventure among the Blackfeet. To count a coup is to strike an enemy dead or alive with something in the hand; to do the above on a living enemy is the height of bravery."
